Deeproot UB-12-2 Root Barrier: An Overview
The Deeproot UB-12-2 is a 12 in high × 24 in wide modular root barrier panel designed to
redirect tree roots downward and away from hardscapes—helping prevent cracking, heaving, and trip hazards while
keeping trees healthy.
Specs 12" H × 24" W panels • 90° root-deflecting ribs • zipper-style joiners • ground-lock tabs •
double top edge • UV inhibitors • recycled polypropylene.
What Is the UB-12-2 & When Should You Use It?
UB-12-2 panels are part of Deeproot’s Universal Barrier system. Their 12-inch depth is ideal for
sidewalks, bike/cart paths, patios, and other light-duty hardscapes , or where nearby trees are
less aggressive . For deeper utilities, roadways, or vigorous species, Deeproot offers taller panels in the same system.

Each panel includes raised 90° ribs to guide roots downward, ground-lock tabs that key into the
soil to resist lifting, a double top edge that adds strength and deters overgrowth, and a
zipper joining system that lets panels slide together quickly on site. UV-stabilized, recycled polypropylene
construction supports long service life.
Typical Applications
Sidewalks, paths & patios: Reduce slab lifting and surface cracking near planting areas.
Linear tree-row installations: Create continuous protection parallel to pavements.
Small surrounds & root-pruning retrofits: Form rings or arcs around existing trees after selective root pruning.

Key Benefits (in Plain English)
Protects hardscapes: Barriers nudge roots downward so they don’t push up slabs and pavers.
Speeds installation: Panels “zip” together—no fiddly loose clips—so long runs go fast.
Looks clean: The double-top edge keeps grades tidy and resists overgrowth at the surface.
Sustainable materials: Made in the USA with high recycled content and UV stabilization.
How Many Panels Do I Need? (Quick Takeoff)
Measure the run length you want to protect (in feet).
Divide by 2 (each panel is 24 in = 2 ft of coverage).
Round up to the next whole panel and add 5–10% for cuts/contingencies.
Example: 60 ft of sidewalk edge ÷ 2 ft/panel = 30 panels. Add 10% (3 panels) ⇒ order ~33 panels.
Installation Overview
The steps below summarize common practices. Always follow Deeproot’s specifications and local arborist guidance for
species, spacing, and pruning.
Layout & utilities: Mark the run and verify utility clearances.
Excavate a trench to ~13–14 in deep (to seat the 12 in panel with ~1–2 in cover), keeping the wall face plumb.
Set the first panel with ribs facing the tree side; engage ground-lock tabs into native soil.
Zip subsequent panels into the previous panel’s joiner track; keep the top edges flush and straight.
Backfill and compact in lifts, maintaining panel alignment; finish grade to slightly cover the top edge where specified.
Final inspection: Confirm continuous protection with no gaps, flips, or reversed panels.

Case Study — 1960s Sidewalk Retrofit (Example)
Setting: A suburban sidewalk (220 ft) bordered by four medium-mature trees began to heave slabs 0.75–1.25 in,
creating trip risks. A replacement slab would be costly; the city wanted a targeted fix with minimal disturbance.
Solution: After an ISA-Certified Arborist performed selective root pruning, the contractor installed
a continuous linear run of UB-12-2 along the sidewalk edge. Panels were zipped together, ground-lock tabs engaged,
and the double top edge set just below finish grade.
Outcome (12-month check): No new slab movement; joints remained tight, and turf re-established along the edge.
The city estimated it avoided roughly 35% of the projected full-replacement cost by opting for root-barrier retrofit instead of full demolition.
FAQ
How deep should I go?
UB-12-2 is 12 in deep—appropriate for many paths, patios, and light-duty slabs. For aggressive species or higher-risk
hardscapes, consider deeper UB panels in the same system (18, 24, 36, or 48 in). Consult local codes and an arborist.
Can I curve or angle the barrier?
Yes—panels are modular and can be installed in arcs or straight runs. The zipper joint allows fast assembly and alignment.
Will the barrier hurt the tree?
Properly used, root barriers redirect roots downward rather than severing them indiscriminately. When retrofitting near existing trees,
pair the barrier with professional root pruning to protect tree health.
