Reinforced Vehicle-Grade Grass Protection

For grassy areas which are driven or parked on frequently, reinforced grass / turf protection mesh will help to protect the parking area from rutting. Constructed of high density foam polyethylene which is non-toxic and lightweight. This reinforced mesh is utilized in both residential and commercial applications where the grass requires increased support for optimal growth.

Applications

Overspill Car Parking | Grassed Access Routes | Footpaths - Buggy / Cart Paths | Parking and Turning Circles for Light Aircraft | R.V. Parks | Lawns Used for Parking Cars, Boats and Trailers | Grassed Verges in Urban and Parkland Areas(Some applications may require additional soil stabilization such as a geogrid.)

Installation

1. Unroll Grass Protection Mesh by reverse rolling.
2. Cut mesh to desired length by using a utility knife, heavy duty scissors or a circular saw.
3. Apply tension to the mesh when laying to ensure adequate contact to the ground,
4. Lay additional rows of the mesh material by butting long edges together then secure all edges by installing 8 inch turf staples every 3 feet.
5. Place additional turf staples where needed if the mesh is not flush with ground or if more securing is needed.

Warning:

Although this mesh is slip resistant, all variances in climate and ground conditions cannot be accounted for. Until the grass has grown through the mesh and become established, the mesh may become slippery if it becomes wet. Special care should be taken if pedestrians walk on the mesh especially if wearing athletic shoes with spikes such as cleats or golf shoes etc.

Ground Reinforcement: An Overview

Ground reinforcement solutions (like grass protection mesh and stabilization grids) spread vehicle and foot traffic loads so turf doesn’t rut, sink, or turn to mud. Below is a clear, job-site-ready guide—what it is, when to use it, how to install, and a quick case study you can borrow for proposals.

What Is Ground Reinforcement?

In simple terms, ground reinforcement is any system that increases the load-bearing capacity of soil or turf. Technically, these systems improve the modulus of subgrade reaction (engineer’s term for stiffness of the base) by distributing point loads across a wider area—translation: tires and footprints don’t punch through soft ground as easily.

Two common categories are: (1) Rolled turf/grass protection mesh—a flexible, extruded plastic mesh that lets grass grow through while resisting rutting; and (2) Cellular grids/pavers—rigid or semi-rigid cells that confine aggregate or root-reinforced soil for higher load demands. Mesh is fast, low-cost, and ideal for light-vehicle or frequent-pedestrian use; grids handle heavier loads but require more base prep.

Key Benefits

  • Rut & Mud Control: Spreads loads so turf stays usable in wet seasons.
  • Keeps Natural Aesthetics: Grass grows through the mesh and can be mowed normally.
  • Quick Installation: Unroll, pin, and allow grass to knit through the apertures.
  • Cost-Effective: Less excavation and base work versus hard paving.
  • Versatile: Parking overflows, RV access, cart paths, utility routes, and event lawns.

Tip: For frequently used, light-vehicle areas (cars, pickups), a reinforced grass mesh is often sufficient. For frequent heavy trucks or fire access lanes, consider a cellular grid or permeable paver system.

When to Choose Grass Protection Mesh vs. Grids

Choose Mesh If:

  • You want fast install with minimal base work.
  • Loads are mostly pedestrians, carts, and occasional cars/light trucks.
  • You prefer a green, natural look year-round.

Choose Grids If:

  • Regular heavy vehicles or frequent turning loads are expected.
  • Site requires high bearing capacity and tight surface performance.
  • You can budget for excavation, base aggregate, and compaction.

Typical Specs for Reinforced Grass Mesh

  • Material: UV-stabilized HDPE (tough, weather-resistant, non-toxic).
  • Form: Extruded mesh that allows grass to grow through and knit the surface.
  • Common Roll Size: ~6.7' × 50' (≈335 sq ft) for small to mid-size projects.
  • Uses: Overflow parking, access routes, RV pads, cart paths, lawns used for boat/trailer parking.
  • Fastening: Steel U-pins or staples along edges and across seams; more pins at entrances/turns.

How to Install Grass Reinforcement Mesh (Step-by-Step)

  1. Time the install: Spring/early growing season helps grass knit faster through the mesh.
  2. Mow & prep: Cut grass short, roll the area to level high spots, and repair soft depressions.
  3. Unroll & align: Roll mesh in the direction of traffic for smoother entries and fewer snags.
  4. Pin edges & seams: Use steel U-pins every 1.5–2 ft along edges; add more where vehicles turn.
  5. Topdress lightly: Brush in fine soil/sand to encourage grass growth through apertures.
  6. Establish the turf: Allow a few weeks of growth/irrigation before regular vehicle use.

Many manufacturers recommend pinning with U-staples and allowing the turf to grow through before heavy use.

Maintenance & Seasonal Tips

  • Mowing: Standard mowing is fine once turf has grown through and stabilized.
  • Edge checks: Re-pin edges that lift after freeze-thaw or intense events.
  • High-stress zones: Add extra pins at entrances, tight turns, and frequent braking areas.
  • Drainage: If ponding persists, add surface grading or a small under-drain to protect turf.

Case Study: City Park Overflow Parking (Light-Vehicle Use)

Site: 9,000 sq ft lawn beside a community park that fills on weekends. Soils were loam over clay; rutting and mud were frequent after rain.

Solution: Reinforced grass protection mesh in 6.7' × 50' rolls, pinned at 18–24" along edges and 24–30" in the field. A light sand/soil topdress was broomed in, and the area was irrigated to accelerate knit-through.

Outcome (8–10 weeks): Turf rooted through the mesh apertures, restoring a green surface that withstood weekend parking without rutting. Maintenance crews reported normal mowing and fewer post-storm repairs. Total installed cost was significantly lower than converting to hard paving, while maintaining a natural, park-appropriate look.

Project-Fit Snapshot:
  • Best for lawns with pedestrians and light vehicles (cars, pickups, golf carts, UTVs).
  • Ideal where a green aesthetic is preferred over asphalt or concrete.
  • Plan installs for growing season to shorten stabilization time.
